Hekate: Keeper of the Keys

It appeared one day: a golden-colored skeleton key bout 3 inches long, on my coffee table. It didn’t have the solidity to be a real key to open a real lock, but it didn’t seem to be a necklace charm, either.
.
I’d left my girlfriend the week before. “You should just jump ship,” she’d say, when we’d fight. “Fine,” I said at our last fight, & I left. I wasn’t interested in drama or threats of abandonment if I expressed emotions. She’d been a lifeboat when I was drowning from the grief of losing my father (to death) & my son (to his precocious burgeoning autonomy), but keeping us afloat had burned through my emotional resources like the coal powering the Titanic.
.
Hekate is the goddess of threes, of hounds & keys. She is the torchbearer who lights the way to & from the underworld, yet she is neither light nor dark. She is the horizon, the liminal in-between where sky, land & ocean meet. Where crossroads intersect & queers worship.
.
I tossed down the key & went about my life. It wasn’t till I attended a wild-woman soul circle that Hekate appeared to me. The teacher led us on a meditation to find a guide who would provide us with a purpose, tools & plans. My guide showed up half-dead, her skull showing through rotted skin on the side of her face. “Come in, come in,” she said with joy. She welcomed me, but the purpose she gave me wasn’t too clear, & my tool was a pink, Barbie-sized plastic wrench, & my plans were to follow Persephone across the River Styx into Hades. Hekate would help.
.
Sinking into the bathtub on the new moon, I open my mind. Epsom salts, chamomile tea bags and the essential oil of Frankincense swirl around my naked body. Candles flicker. “You are soul; you are whole. It is I; it is I. You have always been mine, daughter.” Echoes of sound gesture toward spoken word. “For I am mountains and stone, the hounds and the moon.” Energy currents elicit goosebumps on my exposed skin. “I am greater than you can encompass.” Peace. Stillness. Wholeness. I know: I hold the key. The key to unlock my shadow self. The key to unlock my inner mysteries and my underworld. The key to unlock my power. Hail Hekate, Keeper of Keys and Mysteries.
